Wedding Customs Around the World: Cambodia to Cuba by Andrea R. Britt
People from other parts of the world have their own wedding traditions and beliefs. This series of articles will introduce you to a good number of them. We've added wedding ideas in case you wish to incorporate wedding traditions and customs from other countries in your own wedding.
CAMBODIA A traditional Cambodian wedding lasted three days and three nights, beginning in the bride's home where a priest blesses the couple. The couple puts garland on each other while young girls follow them and lay jasmine flowers on the ground. The parents tie the couple's left hands together with red thread and sprinkle scented water on their hands. The priest lights 3 candles, which are passed along 7 times to married couples surrounding the bride and groom.
Cambodian-inspired wedding idea: Have jasmine flowers scattered for the bride's walk down the aisle. For wedding favors, try colorful and scented candles with red and gold ribbons.
CHINA Couples marry 30 minutes past the hour because the Chinese believe that they will have a prosperous life together on an upswing of the clock's hands. Fireworks are present in weddings because it's believed they scare away evil spirits. The couple share goblets of honey and wine during the ceremony. Instead of gifts, guests give small red envelopes filled with money.
Chinese-inspired wedding idea: Have fireworks go off during pivotal moments; the kiss, the toast, first dance, etc. If you've already a house and furnished it, request that gifts be monetary instead. Send red envelopes along with wedding invitations and tell your guests your wedding is Chinese-inspired.
CRETE Traditional wedding bread is served during the reception. It's decorated with dough in the shapes of heavenly objects (moons and stars) as well as dried fruits. It's said that the sweet aroma of the bread stands for the love between the bride and groom.
Cretan-inspired wedding idea: Have small Cretan wedding bread baked and given to guests as wedding favors. Decorate it with spices, orange and lemon peels, nutmeg and almonds. Place the bread in small decorative boxes.
CROATIA The bride wears pearls around her head, and it's usually her father who places the pearls. In the bride's home, her mother welcomes the bridal party by holding a cup of honey. The bridal party throws coins into the cup. It's also traditional to welcome guests with a rosemary branch.
Croatian-inspired wedding idea: Give your guests rosemary branches they can pin on their left side (like a corsage) as they enter the reception hall. For wedding favors, put honey in small bottles that are decorated with ribbons. Include rosemary with each honey bottle.
CUBA Cuban weddings are festive, particularly receptions. There is the traditional money dance wherein men must pin money on the bride's dress if they want to dance with her.
Cuban-inspired wedding idea: This could be a fun aspect of the reception. Play some Cuban music and invite everyone to dance with the bride and pin money on her dress.
