Wedding Customs Around the World: Korea to Lithuania by Andrea R. Britt
People from other parts of the world have their own wedding traditions and beliefs. This series of articles will introduce you to a good number of them. We've added wedding ideas in case you wish to incorporate wedding traditions and customs from other countries in your own wedding.
KOREA Wild geese, which are symbols of faithfulness, are incorporated in Korean wedding ceremonies. For good luck and fertility, the groom's father throws red dates at the bride. Three days after the wedding, the groom brings his bride to his parent's house. Red beans, cotton seeds and salt are thrown by neighbors to ward off evil spirits. At the groom's parent's house, the bride crosses over a sack of grain and burnt straw to hope for a good harvest.
Korean-inspired wedding idea: Small wooden geese carvings or duck-shaped chocolates are great wedding favors.
LATVIA A Latvian bride wears her wedding dress and veil until midnight. Latvian weddings are festive and involve an abundance of food. Piragi (bacon rolls) is served along with breads, schnitzel, rissoles with sauted sauerkraut, at least 5 types of salad, beer and herbal tea comprise a traditional Latvian wedding menu. The bride is usually "kidnapped" by the groomsmen. In order to get her back, the groom must pay a ransom in the form of a song or a round of beer.
Latvian-inspired wedding idea: Tea made from a range of herbs such as peppermint and chamomile will make great wedding favors. Place at least 3 of each type of herbal tea in a sinamay bag and tie with a white ribbon.
LEBANON A Lebanese bride wears bangles and a tiara on her wedding day. Roses are commonly used in Lebanese weddings. As a symbol of the bride's purity, the new couple serves ghoraibi or white butter cookies to guests at the reception.
Lebanese-inspired wedding idea: Chocolates in the shape of rose petals and monogram white butter cookies will make great wedding favors.
LIBYA Libyan weddings are usually Islamic and presided by an imam. The marriage contract is signed at the bride's home before the actual wedding ceremony and reception. At the reception, the couple doesn't eat with the guests. They eat in seclusion. Rice and candy are showered on the bride.
Libyan-inspired wedding idea: Assorted candies in silver tin boxes will make great wedding favors.
LITHUANIA A Lithuanian wedding has 3 stages: matchmaking, ceremony and atgriztai (coming back). Participants in a Lithuanian wedding guard the couple from evil persons, and cast spells and rituals. The couple is sprinkled with grain and water, and clothed with fur for a rich life together. Upon entering her new home, the bride puts a red sash or towel on the hearth or stove in order to gain favor with the spirits.
Lithuanian-inspired wedding idea: Miniature versions of household items (pots, spoons, fireplace, stove, etc.) will make interesting wedding favors. Place the items in a favor box with a red bow on top.
